Uh, Phil. Genesis was never about having "Girls in the audience."
Steve would have been better staying in Genesis . Only Acolyte has a couple songs that could have been on one of their classic albums.
Ace, keep Rockin
This is the shit. 🥔 🍅
...in resume : I❤️Genesis
Not the best Genesis album as Tony thinks, but still very fresh 44 years later!
This was the best. The rolling rally is stupid. The ending in government center was the best
Phil’s Face Value revealed that the band could take off the prog helmets and thrive on the newly synthesized air of the ‘80s. So Abacab has all of the urgency you would expect from a band who had just drunk that potion and grown giant. Compared to the earlier works, Abacab reveals how cumbersome the old Gabriel-era baggage had become.
“Misunderstanding” was as succinct a pop song as the band had yet managed; coupled with the relative success of “Turn It On Again” and “Duchess,” it appeared that Genesis had found a way to package their appeal into smaller packets. No doubt some fans resented the band’s newfound appeal (implying a sell out) while others delighted in hearing their idols on regular radio rotation.
This marked a Genesis saturation point for some, who found little distinction between Phil Collins’ solo music and the work of Genesis (as ballads like “Throwing It All Away” and “In Too Deep” would have felt at home under either moniker). Genesis started on this path with Abacab, and cultivated a new audience in the process while alienating some old fans. Professionally, the trio was at the top of the mountain, their inevitable descent evidenced on We Can’t Dance...
Hard to begrudge the band making more commercial music when it sounds this good. This album was on the cutting edge of production value for its time, and If any late-period Genesis album is going to win over converts from the band’s “classic” period, this is the one to do it.
I saw this tour in Denver. It was a super cold night, big parking lot to walk... McNichols arena. It was a terrible venue. Anyway, what sticks out in my memory is Phil talking to the crowd between songs. He said "people ask why play this piece of shit versus that piece of shit". Hilarious... My favorite on it is Keep it Dark. It starts with two bars of six, and on the third bar the first "BEEOH" is at 4 and a half beats.
Bought it, traded it for something else.
Nice work!
Steve didn’t understand it was basically Tony and Mike’s band.
Sheer bloody perfection.
I like Tony's comments with all those hints.
Just can't stop laughing at that fake shark!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good side A, Mama certainly stands out and IMO best Phil's vocals performance, Side B is quite weak though. People keep talking about the new course and expressing preferences but to me the real problem was quality. From 1970 to 1980, with the only exception of ATTW3 which was a mixed bag, Genesis only produced sheer brilliance, sure, there was the odd weak song here and there but their albums were incredibly strong, from 81 onward the exact opposte happened, the odd good song here and there but quite weak albums.
Duke to me was the last hurrah of 70's Genesis. The succeeding albums had plenty of prog elements, but they're overshadowed by the hits and those elements aren't as strong. With Duke, they squeezed out as much energy as they could on all fronts, both prog and pop. Best "transitional" album ever.
Useless
Awesome bro..!!!!
I love this song!!!
Awesome record!
This Album made my name.
I think it sounds great , that being said it would probably be awesome with Peter Criss on vocals...The Cat Man singing for the Space Man sounds pretty Phat Man❤😂😂😂
jowels
The lamb was embarrassing texts, but excellent music.
The rest of the group is just too polite to say that Peter's texts were crap.
The text/story was rubbish - the music was fantastic.
The music was wonderful. The text of this album was however a total embarrassment. No wonder they split afterwards.
Genesis jumped the shark for me with Duke and then this. Awful stuff.
Compared to Trick and Wind this one wasn't so good.
In the end Genesis sounded like they were just fulfilling recording contracts. Just a load of quick (“let’s get it done”) jam out pop trash. It happens I suppose.
The last decent album. Mostly crap after this one. Not as good though after Steve left. Selling England has to be their greatest work. Wind & Wuthering post Peter.
God bless DEVO!!!
One of my fave Genesis albums
Greatest Real Band Ever!
best remake 🙂
Fats corky loves Fats ventriloquist
Exactly, Palestinian land!
This is a killer mix of great songs! I love it.
I am thinking this album is going to produce a lot of covers for up and comming bands! Great job to Ace and his posse.
Oh yeah, couldn't forget gene.
Continues to drag Paul in the dust!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
They suffered a lot once Steve left, even though they (except Phil Collins) try to hide it. What a pity. They sounded perfect. I'm a very fussy music listener and only the 1976-1977 Genesis line-up ticks all the right boxes
Magnificent!
It’s a pop album which isn’t easy but as a prog head this is complete garbage. Saccharine
Banks is a Genius
I guess phil collins was in a peter gabriel phase here, which is quite ironic
